For several months now, Meta has been investing heavily in setting up and deploying the Metaverse to be the future of social networks. But in the short term, it is introducing new features to engage users in a more personalized way.
For example, WhatsApp announced the development of “community” Favor group discussion in the application. An unreleased version of the feature was first spotted last year, but the company had yet to confirm its existence.
In fact, communities will be like a directory of groups to better manage their own community with different groups having common interests. Anyone can create a community and invite multiple groups to join. But groups will be part of the community only if their respective administrators accept the invitation.
This seems ideal for large businesses, schools, local clubs, or even non-profit organizations that may have dozens or hundreds of WhatsApp groups.
Mark Zuckerberg himself officially announced the launch of WhatsApp Community Test on his Facebook page. This feature will appear as a new tab in the app (like status and call).
The company didn’t share details about how these groups would be formed, but a spokesperson said the idea is to give ‘close-night groups’ more ways to communicate beyond chat features. Currently offered by Application.
Some risks of communities on WhatsApp
In 2017, Zuckerberg attempted to reorganize Facebook around groups and “meaningful communities.” The company had already begun building a new feature for groups and encouraged users to join as part of its new mission to “bring the world together.” It seems that Zuckerberg is now following the same strategy for WhatsApp.
But making an app like a group on Facebook comes with some risks. Groups are actually considered the main source of fake news or misinformation on the platform. In response, the company is already working on several security-focused updates as well as new controls for administrators to remove messages that exceed certain limits.
More features to come
Along with Communities, WhatsApp showcases interesting features already present in competing messaging apps:
- She launched emoji reactions;
- It offers voice calls to 32 participants as compared to the earlier 8;
- It allows you to share files up to 2 GB larger than before 100 MB;
- It allows group administrators to delete inappropriate or problematic messages for all chat members.
While all of these features will roll out in the coming weeks, the company hasn’t said yet when communities will be added to the app. It is certain that they will be gradually deployed at some point in time, according to Mark Zuckerberg and also on Messenger, Facebook and Instagram.
