In October 2021, developer and social media researcher Alessandro Paluzzi noticed that Instagram was testing longer stories.

This is considered one of the big changes for Instagram Story, and it seems like a natural next step to keep users engaged with the app. In fact, the maximum duration of the video will be one minute (60 seconds) which is no longer cut into pieces.

Testing is on!

It’s been a long time. In January, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced upcoming changes to the app’s video products to streamline the content creation and process and ease the platform’s various tools.

As Mosseri told Decoder:

We’re looking at how we can – not just with IGTV, but with Instagram as a whole – simplify and consolidate views, because we’ve put in a lot of new bets in the past year. I think this year we need to refocus our attention on simplicity and craftsmanship.

By simplifying the app, it will allow Instagram to focus more specifically on Key elements that drive the most engagement in the app – Especially Stories and Reels.

And it’s done! Instagram officially launched a live test of 60-second videos in Stories this November 2021. This means that longer video clips will no longer be split into 15-second segments and will be played in separate story images.

Instagram continues its fight against TikTok
