Want to change your YouTube channel name? It’s a good thing ! YouTube offers a new functionality that is very simple and very practical!
A handy new feature for creators
Until now, creators had to change their name and profile picture for their entire Google account in order to rename their YouTube account. Now Google is making it easier to rename a YouTube channel, a change that will only affect your YouTube profile.
Now, your Gmail name and profile picture no longer necessarily match your presence on YouTube. This update is especially useful for creators who use Gmail to promote their services and/or who use their email accounts for completely different purposes. This feature is already available for most desktop and mobile computers.
on mobile:
- In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture;
- Tap your channel > Edit Channel;
- If you want to change your profile picture, tap your picture and choose an existing picture or take a new one;
- press save;
- If you want to change your name, enter your updated name;
- Press OK.
on the desktop:
- Log in to YouTube Studio.
- If you want to change your profile picture: From the left menu, choose Personalization > Branding. Click Upload and choose an image. Adjust the size of your image and click Done. Click Publish.
- If you want to change your name: From the menu on the left, choose Personalization > Basic Info. Click Edit to update your channel name and enter your new name. Click Publish.
but beware ! If you change your name you will lose your verification checkmark. And YouTube says the only way to get your badge back will be to reapply.
Oddly, YouTube’s help page on managing basic channel information has yet to be updated to say that the name on a Google account can be changed without changing the name.
It is written on the help page that the name of a channel can be changed thrice every 90 days. This probably still applies, so if producers are experimenting with different channel names they should take this into account.

That’s why it’s imperative to name your YouTube channel properly, as it appears in your videos, your channel page, and YouTube and Google search results. Your channel name should honestly represent your brand.
