It will probably have a feature soon that will allow it to be set according to the phone. System Settings If earlier the app only had an option to turn it on or off.

A Reddit user spotted Messenger’s new dark mode settings that Facebook is testing. According to the post, the new feature was spotted on the Facebook Messenger app version 314.1.0.19.119.
Facebook introduced the Dark Mode feature in its Messenger app in April 2019. Subsequently, Instagram adopted dark mode in October 2019, then WhatsApp in March 2020, Facebook for its native app in November 2020 and finally from Snapchat in January 2021.
Why Install Dark Mode on Your App?
Dark Mode helps in reducing the eye strain of the user by converting black text to white background and white text to black background. It can also help save battery life as long as the device it’s used on has an OLED display, as it doesn’t use any pixels when recreating blacks. Since this mod is being tested now, it probably means that we all will get it soon as it is not a big change.
