In July 2021, Facebook launched “Soundmojis” on its Messenger application. The new feature adds sounds to emoji, giving users the freedom to express themselves even more…
Facebook users send over 2.4 billion messages with emoji on Messenger. These emoji, small icons for expressing emotion, add color and vibrancy to Messenger chats around the world. They allow you to say what words cannot. Better yet, Facebook added sound to give users the freedom to express themselves even more.
Earlier this month, Facebook introduced the Soundmojis feature for Messenger users. As the name suggests, this feature gives you emoji sounds, such as:
- drum roll.
Soundmoji are basically top-notch emoji that allow you to send short sound clips in Messenger conversations. They’re now part of media content that users can send to their friends on Facebook Messenger and sit next to options like stickers, GIFs, and emoji.
But you can also use pop culture-drawn Soundmojis, which include clips from TV shows like Bridgeton and popular musicians. Facebook says it will regularly update the recently launched Soundmojis library.
Users can experience this feature for themselves by starting a chat in Messenger and then tapping on the smiley face. From there, they can select the speaker icon.
At launch, you can only use Soundmojis on the Facebook Messenger app for Android and iOS. You should also upgrade your app to the latest version. So before we show you where to find Soundmojis and how to use them, make sure you’re using the latest version of the app.
If you’re using Android, open the Google Play Store, search for Messenger, and tap the app’s name in the search results. If the right green button says Update, press the button to update. If it says open, then Messenger is up to date.
On iOS, open the App Store and search for Messenger. If the blue button next to the name of the app says Update, then you need to press the button to update. But if the blue button says Open, then you are running the latest version of the app.
To use the new Soundmojis expression tool in Facebook Messenger:
- Open a chat where you want to send Soundmoji;
- Click on the smiley face in the bottom chat bar to open the expression menu;
- On the Expression menu, click the Speakers icon. You can preview Soundmojis over and over before deciding which one to send;
- Tap on the send icon to send Soundmoji.
Currently only Facebook Messenger has launched Soundmojis and it is not available on Facebook for web. Users cannot create custom Soundmojis at this time, but there are regular updates with new sound effects.
Some of the sounds are musical, such as the belfry, which features Drake’s words “You only live once, that’s the motto”, and The Sun, which plays a sample of “Good Morning” by Kanye West. And some of the emoji are showing clips from TV shows and movies: the fist emoji on the right is the famous line from Fast & Furious “I don’t have friends, I have family”. 7 by Dominic Toretto. In October 2021, Facebook also launched new “James Bond Soundmojis” following the release of “No Time to Die” in theaters.
