Can you still make a living with your blog in 2022? (thanks covid)

In 2020, wherever you’ve been on the planet, chances are you’ve found yourself in this situation…

You were locked in a tiny Paris apartment, holding a Zoom meeting in your shirt and pajama pants, while staring at your kids who couldn’t go to school out of the corner of your eye.

And, like many French people, you wondered: Is this what I really want?

It wasn’t until you got to the beginning of a project that the idea worked its way up: setting up a blog. You too want to sip cocktails on the beach and live a 4-hour week in Bali. It’s good isn’t it?

You rush to talk to your best friend (Google) and are surprised: Blogging is dead. At least that’s what a lot of articles (…other blogs!) online say. thin. You have come too late. Although? we will see.

When you were zooming your pajamas…

… others (eg students) have taken up a new habit: training at home.

From a more global perspective, e-learning has grown significantly.

It was already a booming sector: since 2000, the size of the e-learning industry has grown manifold… 9! Just that #1.

In 2020, it weighed around $200 billion worldwide. And it is expected to reach about $320 billion in 2025. And the report from which these figures are taken is dated February 2020, so before the arrival of covid and before we feel its impact.

it is too big. But if you’re like me, $200 or $320 billion doesn’t mean much to you. Let’s compare.

So in 2020, e-learning represented $200 billion. That same year, it was “only” 23.1 billion for the music industry. And in 2019, the cinema industry (Netflix, DVD, Blu-ray included) represented 101 billion (we’re not going to take 2020 figures that are disastrous and not representative because rooms were closed).

You read it right E-learning is an industry 8 times bigger than music and 2 times bigger than cinema. Just that #2.

Business school graduates What I conclude from these data: It is essential to establish yourself in an industry that is experiencing strong growth and, let’s face it, it weighs (very) heavy.

And then, these numbers came out, before Covid affected our lives like it did. However, we do know that the pandemic has had a profound effect on education. Hence the size of the global e-learning area should be revised upwards.

What is the relationship between e-learning and blogging?

you will tell me “Great Paul, but why are you talking to us about e-learning instead of the future of blogging? »

Because as you will see, selling information products is the most effective way to make money on the web.

By “information product” I mean content through which you will help people achieve goals in an area that is important to them. It comes in several formats:

  • digital books;
  • Video;
  • online training;
  • e.t.c

The idea here is that, through a blog, you are going to sell information, a skill or whatever. The buyer will acquire this skill, this information through his computer. Then, he will swallow this information (or develop his skills) independently at home.

Hence in e-learning.

Let’s take a little height. To go live with your blog, you must have a profitable blog. And to make your blog profitable, you have to sell something there. This can be advertising space (for example thanks to Google Adsense), or information products (whether we are manufacturers or sellers only by affiliation).

Finally, blogs (apart from personal blogs) are above all vectors of knowledge, whether this information is free (and consumed through published articles) or paid for (through online training). .

So is blogging dead? apparently not! It’s the exact opposite.

A revolution is happening before our very eyes: that of the digitization of knowledge. And like every revolution, there will be winners and losers.

You decide where you want to be.
